There’s plenty of information online about how to take care of cats of different breeds. It’s usually brought to us by professional breeders and their recommendations may include more details than we’d wish them to. There’s nothing wrong with that, but we’ve decided to interview someone who is just a cat lover, like us. This time we’ve decided to learn, how easy it is to take care of a Rex cat.
If you are fond of Rex cats, you are probably a member of a Rex-cats club on Facebook. We’ve reached out the Devon Rex fans – the DevonZone – and have asked them a couple of questions about their pets. Joy, a dedicated cat-lover has agreed to answer a few of our questions and to get us acquainted with super-lovely cats.
M: The rexes are claimed to be the breed that is almost the easiest to care. What is your personal grooming routine for your cat?
J: Yes, very easy maintenance. I do have one though that doesn’t have much fur on his belly & can get quite oily & grubby. I just use baby wipes to give them a bit of a spruce up. One should use the wipes without fragrance, perfume or other “people” stuff, as simple as possible.
M: How many cats do you have? What are their names? Maybe, they have some story behind how they came to your house.
J: Miki is 12 yrs old & was going to be used as a stud cat, but his brother who was originally wanted became available. He’s very much a cat’s cat & loves to snuggle with one of the others.
Bobby will be 9 in March. I bought him as a show cat as the one I was showing decided showing wasn’t for her. Most people kept telling me boys were more affectionate – not so in my experience.
We lost one of our Devons who was Miki’s great niece & the house didn’t seem the same so we bought Yum Yum aka Yummy. Yum is now 18 months old & we show her (encouraged by her breeder). She has fitted in well.
M: Can you recall any hilarious case with your cats?
J: That’s hard. They make me smile every day. Chasing bugs & each other. The way they interact with us & each other. When we first brought Yum home she would stay in bed with me until I got up, although she is a “big” girl now & the weather is nice so she loves being out in out cat run/park. We had a mouse plague once & a couple of mice came in. To watch them work as a team & for one to show the other what it’s all about was funny. Stella (RIP) would pick up the poor mouse by the neck like it was a kitten like a mother cat does. Mousey was rescued & put back outside.
M: If your Rex cat was a cartoon or movie character, who would he/she be?
J: Cats in monkey suits describes them best. I would say Yummy is the Energiser bunny, always on the go. Bobby is like the Sphinx – inscrutable. Miki is everyone’s friend.
The most natural wish after you see these cats – is to touch their fur and to let them cuddle on your lap. Great thanks to Devon Zone and to Joy personally for getting acquainted with these little furry gems.
